Student Perspectives on Implementation of edTPA in Year 1: A Dialectic Analysis

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Chestnut East

Abstract

The concept of dialectics, the combining of two contrasting ideas for richer understandings of learning, is not a new concept in music education. However, employing the dialectic stance in mixed methods research requires the researcher to combine two contrasting perspectives or worldviews of the research phenomenon. The dialectic stance in mixed methods research encourages integration at all levels of the research study in order to develop richer and more complex understandings of the research phenomenon. The purpose of this methodological paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the dialectic stance for music education research. One framework for dialectic analysis will be illuminated using data collected during the first year of mandated edTPA implementation at a large public research university.
