Teaching Sourcing in Upper-Secondary School: A Comprehensive Sourcing Intervention With Follow-Up Data

Sat, April 6, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Linden

Abstract

This study examined the effects of an intervention teaching upper-secondary students to take source information into consideration when selecting, processing, and using texts to complete multiple document tasks. The intervention centered on a contrasting cases approach framed by authentic curriculum-based classroom activities and was implemented over six weeks by teachers who had participated in professional development seminars. Results showed that students who had participated in the intervention placed more value on source information when selecting texts, invested more time and effort in processing the selected texts, and more frequently attributed textual ideas to their respective sources compared to control students. These effects were observed on far transfer tasks and were sustained over a period of five and a half weeks.
