Outcomes of Preservice Secondary Teacher Preparation in Arts Integration to Support Students With Learning Challenges

Abstract

This qualitative study examined experiences of pre-service secondary teachers with arts integration (AI), considering their perceptions of AI after introduction to the concept. An overview is provided related to the value of AI in the secondary education curriculum, validating advantages of AI in secondary education and benefits for students and teachers. Through the examination of the literature, it was probable that AI could improve the academic achievement for diverse students. Not evident was the perspectives of pre-service secondary education teachers. This study was an attempt to provide the voices of pre-service secondary teachers. The means of collecting data were post-course survey. This study offers suggestions to enhance educational practices for teacher education programs, educators, arts advocates, and disability advocates.
