Using Critical Race Theory, Critical Whiteness studies, and a portraiture methodology, this study examines a critical incident in a college classroom to show how racial microaggressions, combined with false empathy, wield a substantively more violent impact on students of color. This study’s use of portraiture in critical race research exemplifies the democratization of evidence through multi-modal narratives in response to this year’s AERA conference theme.
