Where Do We Start? Initiating a Practice-Based Teacher Education Program

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in practice-based teacher education, particularly with the use of high leverage practices. However, there is scant scholarship detailing the laborious and complex work required to create, develop, and implement such a shift within a university teacher education department. Our study utilized survey and interview data to better understand faculty members beliefs and prior work related to this line of inquiry. Initial results suggest that despite practical concerns, our participants are optimistic about high leverage practices and are already engaging in sophisticated teacher preparation along these lines. However, participants desired the programmatic coherence integral to PBTE models.
