The exemplar methodology, prominent in developmental psychology and growing in other social science disciplines, provides a framework for researchers who desire to study exemplars. Its multi-level design which typically includes multiple sample groups makes the exemplar methodology an ideal fit for mixed methods research. This paper analyzes the use of the exemplar methodology in a mixed methods study on P-20 partnerships in education. This paper describes the challenges in using the exemplar methodology, specifically the difficulty in identifying experts in a given area, and provides researchers with steps to take to prevent bias when identifying experts.
