Abstract

This study examines the relationship between collective bargaining practices and departure behavior among public school principals in the United States, using data from the School and Staffing Survey. We found that unionization is associated with lower departure rates, although this relationship is not necessary due to workplace, salary or supervisory autonomy advantages of unionization that its proponents tend to promote.
