Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 206C

Abstract

The importance of providing services that cater to the needs of students with disabilities is strongly emphasized in Hong Kong. As school work gets more demanding, secondary students with disabilities face numerous struggles in schools. Families are under immense pressure in making sure that their children make adequate progress, but support for these parents is often limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how one secondary school has successfully created a school-based parent support group which supported families of students with disabilities. Results indicated that families not only were satisfied with the information and resources they received from the group, but they were also empowered to take an active role to improve the organization of the school.
