Perceived and Implemented Human Resource Management for Beginning Teachers: How Does It Relate to How Teachers Perceive Their School Leader?

Abstract

Although different researchers linked educational leadership and HRM to the quality of teaching and learning, little is known about the relationship between school leadership and HRM. In a quantitative phase of this mixed method study, the relationship between school leadership style and teachers’ perceptions of 3 crucial HR practices for beginning teachers is investigated based on a teacher survey. In a second qualitative phase, the way principals implement HRM for beginning teachers in 3 cases in which the aggregated teacher scores for perceived HRM and leadership are high is compared with 3 cases in which the aggregated teacher scores are low. The results underscore the importance of an integrated perspective on leadership for perceived and implemented HRM.
