An Efficacy Trial on Using Social Interdependence Theory to Promote Prosocial Behavior in Classrooms

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Osgoode Ballroom

Abstract

A stage 2 efficacy trial of the PAX Good Behaviour Game (GBG) was undertaken in 17 elementary schools. Schools were randomly assigned to intervention or control group. The GBG uses social interdependence theory to create cooperative groups that aim to behave in predefined manners to gain non-tangible rewards. Results indicated gains for the intervention group, compared to the control group in self-esteem, self-regulation and improvement in classroom behaviours observed by teachers. The intervention is deemed suitable to trial in an effectiveness trial.
