Internationalization and the Discursive Reconfiguration of Space in Higher Education

Abstract

In this paper, we propose to reconsider the notion of spatiality in the study of internationalization of higher education. Through Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough & Wodak, 1997), we examine two internationalization strategic plans from two research-intensive Canadian universities in order to identify how the category of space is constructed through institutional discourses on internationalization. Our main aims are: 1) to identify how discourses on internationalization of higher education conceptualize the category of space; 2) to propose a spatial conceptualization of key phenomena associated to processes of internationalization of higher education, and 3) to propose an alternative to the binary national/international in the analysis of internationalization of higher education in Canada
