Abstract

This study examined literacy specialist candidates’ (LSC) perceptions of simulated parent-teacher conferences using TLE TeachLivETM (a mixed reality environment using avatars) and communication techniques used during the simulations. Transcripts of video recordings of conferences using TLE TeachLivETM, field notes, and LSC reflections were analyzed. The first theme related to LSC’s views on the simulated conferences. The second theme covered the nature of what occurred during the sessions. Commonalities across participants’ perceptions related to their feelings that the simulated parent-teacher conferences were worthwhile, nervousness, not making sense while speaking with parents, and quick thinking on the part of the LSCs. Effective communication skills related to organization, use of literacy-related jargon, empathy, and positivity emerged during simulated conferences using TLE TeachLivETM.
