Heutagogy (Self-Determined Learning): New Approach to Student Learning in Higher Education

Abstract

Heutagogy (self-determined learning) suggest a learning environment which enhances student autonomy (i.e. apart from the course subject, students choose what, with whom, from what and how to learn and how to evaluate their learning). The paper presents a case study of ten innovative heutagogy courses (1000 students) in higher education programs. The course lecturers created a learning community which followed the process. The data were collected from students' and lecturers’ written diaries, lecturers' community meetings, interviews with students, and students' products. Data was analyzed by case-study method. Findings demonstrated how students and lecturers cope with challenges like uncertainty and vagueness and turn them into meaningful learning and enhance their passion for knowledge and pleasure in learning.
