Poster #13 - AV1: An Avatar for Hospitalized Students With Long-Term Illness

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Long-term illness and hospitalisation may affect not only children’s health, but also their continued education, social development and emotional attachment (Nicholas, Fellner, Koller, Fontana Chow, & Brister, 2011; Nisselle, Hanns, Green, & Jones, 2012). When children are away from school due to long-term illness, it is important that they have the opportunity to stay in touch with teachers, classmates and friends, and that they are quickly reintegrated into class (Drachler et al., 2009; No Isolation, 2018a). AV1 is a telepresence robot that is designed to help children who are isolated from classmates and friends due to long-term absence from school.
