Perspectives on Adult Learning in Community Choral Settings

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the learning of adult singers in community choir settings. Using a multiple case study design, three community choral settings were examined. Data was collected through non-participant observations and interviews with the music directors and singers from each of the ensembles. In support of preceding literature, our findings revealed participants find many social and personal benefits to participating in community choir. Positive past experiences in choir served as a strong motivator to joining an ensemble as an adult. Rehearsal techniques influenced participants’ rehearsal experience but to what extent varied with previous singing experience and ability to learn new music.
