Non-Indigenous Leadership of Reconciliation Education in Saskatchewan Schools: Challenges, Opportunities, and Supports

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 205B

Abstract

The under-representation of Indigenous educators largely means that non-Indigenous principals have been tasked with leading reconciliation education in many schools. While much as been written about the need to decolonize and indigenize education (Battiste, 2013), very little has been written about how non-Indigenous school principals might go about supporting this work and the challenges they might encounter. This paper draws on data from a larger study of principals use of strategic advocacy around the implementation of TRC Calls to Action in Saskatchewan Schools and specifically seeks to facilitate a deeper understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and supports school leaders encounter as the attempt to engrain and sustain reconciliation as an integral part of Canadian education.
