The purpose of the current study is to investigate the efficacy of using summarizing strategy in an immersive virtual reality learning environment. A total of 75 college students were randomly assigned to one of the four conditions formed by a 2 X 2 factorial design with the immersive environment (virtual reality vs. interactive video) as one factor and the use of summarizing strategy (yes vs. no) as the second factor. The results indicated that a) learners reported lower effort after using the summary strategy; and b) summarizing reduced learners’ perceived success when they received instruction through the interactive video. These findings are discussed within the cognitive load theory framework.
