The nature of workplace performance has changed fundamentally through technology, and an increasing number of complex tasks are being carried out in groups. Accordingly, there has been increased attention in the assessment community on relevant competencies such as collaborative problem solving (CPS). One notable challenge for assessing CPS concerns developing methods to make sense of large streams of fine-grained data generated during interaction in digital environments and aggregating that information to create an output suitable for reporting individuals’ CPS competency. In the current study, we describe two methods to aggregate information from fine-grained log data about individuals’ CPS skills while interacting with a simulation-based task on electronics concepts to create profiles that categorize types of collaborative problem solvers.
