Crafting Digital Pedagogical Contact Zones With FaceTime in Early Childhood Education

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This paper shares vignettes from an international early childhood pedagogical inquiry where children, educators, and researchers in Australia and Canada used Facetime on iPhone to think collectively with our relations with place and technologies. Situated within a common worlds framework, we advance the concept of ‘digital pedagogical contact zones’ as a context-specific practice of crafting pedagogies that respond to the fraught settler colonial inheritances we encounter, and work to disrupt, in an urban park and forest. As we share documentation from our inquiry, we refuse romanticized Euro-Western conceptions of children as global citizens or environmental stewards, and instead work to craft digital pedagogical contact zones that stick with the tensions of weaving technologies with our encounters with place.
