#MyTruthMatters: Narratives of Graduate Students of Color at a Predominantly White Institution

Abstract

It is well-documented that graduates students of color (GSOC) face unique challenges due to the heightened racial tensions on many college campuses. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of GSOC at a predominately White institution (PWI). Using participatory action research and photo elicitation, within a critical framework, we present the truths of GSOC using a series of photos and associated narratives as related to: obstacles, need, support, and thriving in graduate school. Consistent with the literature, our participants discussed the negative impact of campus racial climate and provided evidence of a need for a sense of belonging, financial support, and self-care practices in order to thrive.
