Abstract

African-American women leading school districts as school superintendents of schools are rare. This session will explore a historical qualitative research focused on African-American female superintendents. The superintendents’ experiences including paths to the superintendency, barriers of race, gender and oppression, accomplishments, and recommendations for aspiring African-American female educators will be investigated. The goal of this session is to inform the community of the African-American female trailblazers and to bring awareness to their experiences. Participants will walk away with knowledge of African-American women who served as superintendents of schools and learn about how they persevered.
