The Pedagogy of Loss: Trauma, Memory, and the Mundane in Teacher Education

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

The presenter will take up the pedagogy of loss to explore the potential for artistic practices in destabilizing regulated thought in teacher education so that new potentials might emerge. Drawing on her recent research (XXXX, 2007; 2014; 2015) with artistic inquiry, her current photographic work, Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987) concept of trauma and Berlant’s (2011) notion of desire, the presenter will discuss the pedagogy of loss as a site for creative acts of coming to know. The presenter will explore the artistic processes in the asignifying rupture of loss where the suspension of normative ways of knowing allows what Atkinison (2018) describes as “a force of experimentation and not judgment” (p. 156).
