To properly understand and tend to the unique situations or issues a group is faced with, there must first be an understanding of the characteristics of the people in that group. Mid-career faculty, those with 12-20 years of teaching in higher education, is one such group whose characteristics and unique issues have received less attention than other academic groups. Using demographic data from the Institutional Survey and Faculty Survey of the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF), this paper helps us form a working understanding of mid-career faculty, expanding our understanding of both their professional and personal lives.
