GCE is a high profile area of research and practice, with much debate around its contested nature. Many scholars have attempted to chart the different ‘types’ of GCE. Drawing on a social cartography, and applying a heuristic of three major discursive orientations—neoliberal, liberal and critical—and their interfaces, we critically unpack conflations, contradictions and tensions within and between 12 well-known typologies of GCE. Preliminary results show the greatest confluence of GCE ‘types’ within the neoliberal, greatest number of GCE ‘types’ within the liberal, and a conflation of different ‘types’ of GCE within what is identified as ‘critical GCE’. The typologies also demonstrate interfaces between neoliberal-liberal and liberal-critical discursive orientations as well as new interfaces: neo conservative-neoliberal-liberal and critical-post critical.
