This paper describes an examination of prospective elementary teachers’ online discussion posts to determine the extent to which a blog prompt utilizing visual representations fostered productive mathematics learning. This study contributes to the limited body of research on how online discussion blogs can be used effectively to foster mathematics learning. The two major findings include: (a) prospective elementary teachers can critically analyze their peers’ mathematical thinking and (b) alignment between in-class and online learning experiences facilitated meaningful conversations. Because research findings show that this population often has limited experiences with and may be intimidated by participating in mathematical discussions (e.g., Author, 2009; Jansen, 2009), these findings offer evidence that online discussion prompts can promote productive mathematics learning.
