Premised on work that prospective teachers undertook in a community-based field experience initiative that spanned the course of five years, this paper situates community-based field experiences as alternative field placements where beginning teachers learn to teach outside traditional content area classrooms. Through analysis of prospective teachers’ writing as a vehicle for inquiry, this paper discusses findings related to how, through work in community-based spaces, prospective teachers learn to question the role of the teacher and the role of curriculum in working with youth.
