Abstract

In two phases, this mixed-methods study investigated students’ relevance appraisal processes, hypothesized to be a key mechanism at work in relevance interventions. Phase 1 investigated students’ interpretations of relevance and characteristics of their relevance appraisals using thematic analysis. Phase 2 developed a novel self-report measure to assess the relevance appraisals of secondary students. Taken together, the study offers insights into the complexities of students’ relevance appraisals and their relations to subjective task value.
