Developing a Self-Reported Measure for High School Students' 21st Century Skills

Abstract

Forty-eight items were developed based on well-established frameworks for the 21st century learning (e.g., P21, enGauge) to measure high school students’ perceptions of their own 21st century skills. The participants were high school students from public schools in southeast Texas. Factor analysis and reliability analysis suggested four constructs—aligned with the initial framework: learning and innovation skills, life and career skills, interdisciplinary themes, and information, media, and technology skills. There were three items related to global awareness that were originally considered as part of interdisciplinary themes but results resulted regrouping of them under life and career skills. 21CSI provides researchers and educators with an easy-to-use/administer and cost effective way of surveying students’ about their skills need in the 21st century.
