Assessing Students' 21st Century Skills in Innovative Pedagogical Practices Using Technology

Abstract

Although the importance of developing student’s 21st century skills as part of the school curriculum in has been emphasized across nations, there has been less empirical research on assessing students’ 21st century skills in authentic classroom setting. This study examined the students’ achievement in 21st century skills namely information literacy, self-directed learning, collaboration and problem solving skills. The study adopted multiple case study approach. Across the 15 cases examined, students reached higher levels of competence in collaboration and self-directed learning, but demonstrated relatively low achievement in problem solving and information literacy. Results also indicate that pedagogical designs incorporating problem-solving activities are more likely to engender wider coverage of attributes and higher levels of students’ achievement
