Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

Teaching is a hard profession as it is difficult to totally prepare teachers for the various challenges they will face once they enter the classroom. For many education preparation programs, preparing teachers to handle the challenges that potentially come along with an urban environment is even more difficult. Tomorrow's teachers need experiences in various types of school environments (as many as possible) before officially entering the classroom to be effective teachers of all students. This study examined the experiences of recent elementary education graduates from a predominantly white university a summer enrichment program that took place the summer before they officially entered the classroom. The study also examined the teachers’ self-efficacy at the conclusion of their first semester teaching.
