Measuring Co-Teaching in Student Teaching: Validation Results Supporting an Instrument for Teacher Education Research

Abstract

Co-teaching in student teaching has been promoted as a promising innovation in field experiences. To further study this model as a complex construct and to respond to teacher education policy, researchers need access to valid and reliable instruments. This paper presents one stage in a multi-stage study to develop the Co-Teaching in Student Teaching Survey (Co-TISTS). Strong indicators of construct validity and reliability based on internal consistency support future use of the Co-TISTS to measure the prevalence of co-teaching in student teaching experiences. Use of a common instrument can facilitate collaboration among researchers across programs and support large-scale studies to inform teacher education policy and practice.
