Poster #22 - Can Eye-Gaze Behaviors Predict Self-Reported Intrinsic Motivation Scores During Game-Based Learning?

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to identify whether the frequency and proportional duration of fixations on areas of interest (AOIs) relevant to solving the mystery in CRYSTAL ISLAND, a game-based learning environment, predict self-reported Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) scores. 58 undergraduates were instructed to solve a mystery by reading books and research articles about pathogens, speaking with characters, and scanning food items. Significant regressions revealed the frequency of fixations on relevant content-based AOIs predicted self-reported perceived competence, and effort and importance subscale scores. However, the proportional duration of fixations on feature-based AOIs did not predict self-reported IMI scores. Additionally, a significant regression revealed the more time students fixated on a feature-based AOIs predicted a decrease in learning outcomes.
