The Contextualization of Statistics in High School Mathematics Texts

Abstract

The concepts and practices of the discipline of statistics are powerful for making sense of the world around us. For statistics to be useful for people to make sense of the world they should have experiences using statistics to investigate the world around them. In this study, I investigated how two major high school mathematics textbook series form the contextualized situations appropriate for the use of statistics. A major findings is that many of the major issues in society today are completely absent from school textbooks and the focus is instead on fictional and superficial situations.
