Plot Twists: Summer Melt Among California's High School Graduates

Abstract

Recent years have drawn attention towards college-committed students’ shifting educational trajectories during the months following high school graduation. In light of research that suggests students of color and students planning for two-year program are disproportionately likely to drop out of college before the start of classes, more efforts are needed to understand this phenomenon in the diverse state of California. Contrary to existing research, this review of data for one large, California school district proves higher rates of summer melt for students planning to pursue universities – warranting additional investigation into enrollment procedures for the state’s public four-year colleges.
