Principals' Leadership Practices in Guiding Professional Learning Communities to Institutionalization

Abstract

We examined how six school principals succeeded in initiating professional learning communities (PLCs) and supervising their growth to full institutionalization (Huffman & Hipp, 2003). These principals stood out among 37 school leaders from three communities of practice (CoPs) in the context of research-action-training sessions. In addition to their participation in the sessions, the six successful principals were individually interviewed to examine their supervision practices with their school’s PLC. In our analysis using a list of codes from the five dimensions of the PLC Carpenter, 2018), four groups of effective practices in PLC were identified.
