Relationships Between Learning Environments and Self-Efficacy in Primary Schools and Differing Perceptions of At-Risk Students

Fri, April 5, 12:00 to 2:00pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 802A

Abstract

Although numerous instruments exist to assess a variety of learning environments for different uses, few have been validated for use at the primary school level. Similarly, there is a dearth of research that has examined whether students who are academically at-risk, perceive their learning environment differently than not-at-risk students. Using a sample of 609 students in 31 classes, data were analysed to examine: 1) whether academically at-risk students perceive the classroom environment differently to students who are not-at-risk; and 2) whether relationships exist between primary school students’ perceptions of the classroom environment and their self-efficacy. The results provide practically significant insights for teachers striving to create supportive learning environments which enhance the self-efficacy and learning outcomes of all students.
