Understanding graphs is essential for participating in the information society. Graph comprehension, i.e. the process of understanding and using information presented in data visualizations, is an important skill for students. In this research project, an instrument was developed to assess students’ competence in extracting information from data-oriented graphs in the context of sustainable development. The instrument was tested with about 200 pupils in grade 8 of German grammar schools. Analyses with CCT and IRT show that students are quite capable of reading data points, identifying trends and are also able to extrapolate, when given dichotomous multiple choice items. Results, limitations and focus of the test instrument are discussed in this paper.
