Student Self-Assessment: Connecticut Music Teachers' Use and Perceptions

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Chestnut East

Abstract

Self-assessment can be a powerful tool in education, but there is a dearth of research about how it is being used in arts, particularly in music. This study used a mixed-methods follow-up explanation design to gather data from 234 Connecticut Music Teachers (response rate = 11.65%) using a survey developed, validated, and piloted during the study. The survey revealed multiple significant differences between when teachers have students self-assess and how they have students self-assess based upon grade level taught. Further, the survey revealed many uniform positive perceptions of self-assessment. Follow-up interviews with five teachers who reported frequent use of self-assessment revealed how teachers are using self-assessment in their daily formative and summative practice.
