Engineering Education Collaborations: Exploring "Ways of Thinking"

Abstract

The Sustainability Education Framework for Teachers, used in environmental and sustainability education, offers a ‘ways of thinking’ lens for considering complex challenges. Guided by this framework, five engineer-social scientist teams across various engineering education projects were interviewed in a dyad to understand their conceptualizations of futures, values, systems, and strategic thinking for learning and instruction-related challenges. Several team meetings were also observed. Participants discussed what these four ways of thinking meant for engineering education, provided examples of these ways of thinking from their collaborative research, and also discussed challenges of implementation. Integrating these four ways of thinking could serve as an organizing structure for future collaborators to frame decisions regarding engineering education problem/solution constellations.
