Leveraging Leadership Preparation Development for School Change

Abstract

School culture creates a psychosocial environment that strongly influences administrators, faculty and students (Kaplan & Owings, 2013). It is the role of the principal to create and sustain this school culture. The School Leadership Program (SLP) is an innovative leadership preparation development program for K-12 principals in a Northeastern US state that focuses on building a principal’s capacity to create positive school culture. This paper examines the efficacy of this program in relation to this stated goal. Initial findings demonstrate that the SLP is effective in increasing important indicators related to building a more positive school culture: psychological capital, teacher-principal trust, and collaborative relationships between principals across districts.
