Predicting Retention in Undergraduate Computer Science Courses: Perceived Instrumentality and Attendance

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to extend previous research examining motivational factors associated with retention in undergraduate computer science by examining the relationship between endogenous and exogenous perceived instrumentality, course attendance, and continued enrollment in computer science courses. Introductory computer science students’ perceived instrumentality at the start of the semester and attendance during the middle and end of the semester were used in logistic regression analyses to predict enrollment in computer science courses for three semesters following the introductory course. Results indicate that endogenous instrumentality and attendance at the end of the semester were associated with an increased likelihood of continuing to enroll in computer science courses.
