Previous research suggests that timed tests are detrimental to student learning of addition and subtraction facts. This study explores how different time modes influence student performance in an addition and subtraction fact-practice game. These modes include an untimed mode, a time-limit mode, and a “beat your time” mode in which time is tracked but not limited. The results indicated that the time-limit mode was associated with poorer accuracy but better speed than the untimed mode. However, the “beat your time” mode was also associated with better speed, but without detrimental effects on accuracy. The findings confirm the notion that time limits are problematic for student fact learning, but suggest that time tracking may have some beneficial effects.
