The purpose of this formative program evaluation was to investigate the efficacy of a new Grade 7 to 12 alternative school that utilizes a dropout prevention model to recruit students in Grade 6 and emphasizes a targeted post-secondary success program. This mixed-methods research involved collecting and analyzing a variety of student data across one full school year, including attendance, course passing rates, a student survey, and in-depth, semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with parents and students. While certain results from this study indicate success with supporting students, such as through the relationship-based culture, this study also reveals the complexities of reforming alternative schools and the importance of a triangulated, multi-faceted approach to program evaluation.
