This paper explores the binaries deployed in discussions about community-university engagement (CUE) at an institutional as well as classroom level, and considers how we might think differently. We draw on the work of the French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty as well as the Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky to consider how non-binary thinking might help people realize the potential of CUE.
