Abstract

In 2017 researchers from a western university conducted 21 interviews with novice teachers, mentor teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders from four highly-impacted Title I schools in a large public school district to explore qualities of successful novice teachers. The research questions guiding the study were: 1) How do various stakeholders describe successful novice teachers? 2) What experiences do various stakeholders attribute to the development of successful novice teachers? 3) What personal characteristics do various stakeholders attribute to the development of successful novice teachers? An important finding of the study explicated in this paper is the hidden and largely unexamined ways that student social and emotional learning informed understanding and implementation of effective teaching practices for novice teachers.
