"Four Inches and 4,000 Assumptions": Microaggressions, Gender Identity Denial, and Beyond

Sat, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 202D

Abstract

This study examines the experiences of four gender non-confirming young athletes who face gender identity discrimination on the sporting field, in school, and in public spaces. Experiences of gender stereotyping, misgendering, and gender identity denial are explored through in-depth interview and observational data of these four young athletes, their family members, and their coach. Implications for classrooms, teacher and coaching preparation programs, as well as for theoretical understandings of gendered microaggressions and other forms of gender and gender identity discrimination are discussed.
