Computational thinking (CT) is the fourth foundational skill in addition to reading, writing and arithmetic. However, the assessment of CT for K-12 students is still in its infancy. This paper presents an assessment approach that focuses on the process of scientific inquiry and problem-solving while 4th to 6th grade elementary students were practicing CT in a project-based, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)+CT learning environment. A problem solving chart mapped with various CT components based on a K-12 engineering design process guided the assessment of CT in students. Implications for educators interested in integrating CT in K-12 STEM learning will be discussed.
