Abstract

This paper describes the results from a Global Citizenship Survey used to assess the extent of American high school students’ perception of global citizenship conducted in spring 2017. One hundred and ten students completed the quantitative survey, and 34 students answered open-ended questions regarding global citizenship. The results indicated the importance of global citizenship for raising cultural awareness and for obtaining a deeper understanding of cultural empathy, the responsibilities of global issues, and the imperatives to become a global citizen in diverse societies. This study identifies the components of global citizenship that should be included in high school curriculum to help students become open-minded and appreciative of the contributions of culture in today’s globalized society.
