The conflict in Syria has resulted the largest number of displaced people in history, the deaths of over 400,000 people and countless numbers of human rights violations and abuses. Within a relatively short time, 93,725 Syrians arrived in Canada resulting in an urgent call for school systems and community agencies to respond. This presentation draws on findings from a research program that examined the educational and psychosocial needs of Syrian youth in Canada. The authors will provide examples of programs and best practices that support integration and they will discuss how school leaders can create safe, supportive and welcoming spaces for newcomers and refugees.
