Research shedding light on the ways in which hip-hop can serve as a conduit to the development of an action- and social-justice-oriented critical consciousness have become prevalent among other critical and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches. However, the majority of the trainings that of prepare teachers to enact critical hip-hop pedagogies (CHHP) are situated outside of formal university-based teacher education programs, and questions remain as to how to best prepare educators to utilize hip-hop cultural practices, artifacts and aesthetics towards critical educational ends. Framed by tenets and elements of CHHP and Bourdieu’s conceptualization of cultural capital this paper examines various hip-hop pedagogical practices taught and processes of teaching and learning occurring in one university-based hip-hop teacher education course.
